A successful programme of remediation for an SEN difficulty must involve looking at the pupil’s underlying skills. Intervention should then include the strengthening of any areas of underlying weakness as well as academic tuition. This combination can result in a significant learning improvement that will boost confidence and so increase learning potential.
The Unicornmaths programme is intended to be used in conjunction with the remediation of any deficits in underlying skills. Many children who have problems with maths are dyspraxic and their lessons will include exercises for the development of visual perception and the maturation of both gross and fine motor skills. This has the added advantage of being fun as well as breaking up intensive one-to-one sessions. Although few teachers are trained occupational therapists there is a great deal of information on areas such as Brain Gym that are available to SEN staff.
